On the occasion of the premiere of Jasmina Cibic’s new film The Gift—Act I (2019) at the steirischer herbst ’19 festival in Graz, UGM invited the artist to share with her experience in directing, producing, and distributing art films. In a talk with the artist, moderated by curator Simona Vidmar, the audience went behind the scenes and find out more about Cibic’s complex, financially challenging, and inspiring filmmaking. A screening of her recently completed film The Gift followed. On the following day, Jasmina Cibic tutored a masterclass for students and young professionals working in the field of film, film production and video art.

Jasmina Cibic (1979, Ljubljana) is one of the most recognised Slovenian contemporary artists abroad. For the past five years she has been working predominantly as an author of art films. She often incorporates sculpture and performance in her gallery installations. Her works are site and context specific and are often produced in collaboration with architects, researchers, and other specialists. In her work, the artist deals with forms of soft power, which often occur through the use of art, architecture in particular. Her recent film was shot at the Espace Niemeyer in Paris, the architectural work of the famed Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and the headquarters of the French Communist Party, which turns into a backdrop to a poetic cinematic narrative.
