The Academy of Applied Arts at the University in Rijeka (2005) is the only higher education institution in Croatia that fosters applied arts. It is situated within a 7000 m2 building at Student’s complex Kampus right above the centre of Rijeka.
Academy has its roots in the Department of Fine Arts (1963), from which many prominent art educators, artists and art historians emerged who left strong impact in local society. With 54 permanently employed academic staff and about 300 students, Academy is disseminating the aesthetic, intellectual and social environment impact in the highest ESG level of creativity and critical thinking within undergraduate and graduate study programmes: Art Education, Applied Arts, Acting and Visual Communication and Graphic Design within work units for drawing, photography, printmaking, 3D printmaking, stop-animation and filmmaking studio, computer unit, mosaic, glass, wood and metal unit.
According to the Strategy of the University in Rijeka, besides accredited programmes and life-long programmes, Academy implies the Strategy of internalisation within European project platforms (Erasmus +, CEEPUS, Creative Start Up, IPA etc.).
During 2017/2018 the Academy has also constituted Centre for Digital Printing, Centre for Glass, Centre for Mosaic, and the Centre of Innovative Media.
In the last several years activities of various kind (exhibitions, workshops, international workshops, volunteering, creative start-up projects, guest hosting, mobilities but also involvement in other international/European projects) were carried out. The Academy gives full attention to the student programmes and needs (those of regular and ex-students within Alumni). Moreover, within the complex frame of the coming year 2020, when the city of Rijeka is to become the European Capital of Culture, the Academy strongly prepares the platform of all the possible tasks and already planned/prepared programme activities.
